Emerging Coronaviruses

Dr. Baric is a William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology from North Carolina State University in 1977 and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from North Carolina State University in 1983.

He is currently a standing member of National Academies of Science standing committee on Emerging Infectious Disease and 21st Century Health Threats.

Dr. Baric’s group has published over 370 papers, many in highly visible journals like PNAS, Nature Medicine, Science, PloS Medicine and PloS Pathogens. The Baric laboratory uses genetic, immunologic, molecular, and biochemical approaches to study the molecular mechanisms regulating virus replication, pathogenesis, molecular evolution, and cross species transmission.

his group has developed novel animal models of human disease and identified dozens of host susceptibility loci that regulate emerging CoV pathogenesis.
