Expanding NC's Global Engagement

Carey directs Go Global NC’s Global Leaders Program, which brings policymakers and business leaders to key countries to expand North Carolina’s international business, trade and education opportunities.

Before joining Go Global NC, Carey was a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In her most recent role, she designed and managed International Visitor Leadership Programs (IVLP). Through IVLP, the State Department’s premier professional exchange program, foreign leaders examine U.S. approaches to international challenges and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts. Carey previously served as the Portugal country desk officer, where she worked closely with the Department of Defense on the U.S. Air Force streamlining of its base in the Azores. Her first Foreign Service tour was in Mumbai, India, where she adjudicated nonimmigrant visas and provided consular services to U.S. citizens living and traveling in India. Carey’s most memorable experiences in Mumbai were opportunities to engage Indian youth – including volunteering at a local boys’ shelter and addressing Indian students interested in studying in the United States. She received a Meritorious Honor Award for her compassionate service to American citizens and a Meritorious Honor Group Award for assisting with President Obama’s 2010 visit to India.

Carey earned a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Her international experience includes travel to countries across Europe, Asia, and South America for business and tourism.
