"Orage Quarles III has served as President and Publisher of the Coloradoan in Fort Collins, Colorado and as Publisher of the Stockton Record in California. In 1993 he was named Publisher of The Herald, the first African American publisher of a daily newspaper in the South. Quarles left in 1996 to become the first ever Publisher of The Modesto Bee in Modesto, California, and in 2000, he became President and Publisher of The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina.In 1990, Quarles was named Gannett Newspaper Publisher of the Year. In 1993 he was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalist’s Hall of Fame. He was selected as Editor & Publisher’s 2002 Publisher of the Year.Quarles is Past Chairman of the Newspaper Association of America. He is a founding member of the National Association of Minority Media Executives (NAME). He also serves on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication Foundation, High Five: Regional Partnership for High School Excellence and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Freedom Forum, the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute, Rex Healthcare and Wake Education Partnership.
